Honoring Barbados' Islamic Legacy - Nazim Baksh Interviews Authors of "Historic Mosques of Bridgetown"
In this captivating conversation, award-winning journalist Nazim Baksh sits down with Sulieman Bulbulia and Sabir Nakhuda, the co-authors of a groundbreaking new book celebrating the rich and often overlooked Islamic heritage of Bridgetown, Barbados. Titled "Historic Mosques of Bridgetown", the book traces the origins and development of Islam in the Caribbean island, documenting the lives, contributions, and spiritual legacy of the early Muslim community, many of whom arrived from South Asia and the Middle East in the early 20th century. The Will to Survive | In Conversation with Ahmed Hamid | Interview w/ Nazim Baksh
The Will to Survive is a comprehensive study of the history of Muslims in Guyana, focusing primarily on the period between 1930 and 2000. Organized into thirteen sections and 114 short chapters, the book examines key areas including education, politics, language, organizations, slavery, and indentureship. This work is likely the first book devoted exclusively to the Muslim experience in Guyana. While references to Muslims appear sporadically in other historical accounts — often inaccurately — The Will to Survive provides a dedicated, accurate, and detailed exploration. Representing approximately 7% of Guyana’s population, the Muslim community faced significant struggles to maintain their faith, culture, and identity. This book seeks to document their resilience and contributions within the broader context of Guyanese society. This interview features commentary on the book by its author Ustad Ahmad Hamid and renowned CBC journalist Nazim Baksh.
